Amherst Exempted Village Schools is committed to providing equitable educational opportunities for multilingual learners. The English Learner (EL) Program supports students as they develop English language proficiency while fully participating in grade-level learning. Through targeted language instruction, instructional supports, and collaboration with classroom teachers, the district helps English learners build the academic and communication skills needed for success in school and beyond.
Identification & Eligibility
All newly enrolled students complete Ohio's Language Usage Survey during registration. Students whose primary or home language is not English may be screened using the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) to determine whether they qualify for English Learner services. Families are notified of screening results and program eligibility in accordance with state and federal requirements.
English Learner Services
English Learner services are individualized based on each student's English language proficiency and academic needs. Students receive an annual English Learner Plan (EL Plan) outlining language development goals, instructional supports, accommodations, and services. Support may include small-group instruction, push-in or pull-out services, classroom collaboration, consultation with teachers, and ongoing progress monitoring.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
Students identified as English Learners participate annually in the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) until they demonstrate English proficiency. The district also monitors academic progress through classroom assessments, NWEA MAP Growth, Ohio State Tests, and other local measures to ensure students receive appropriate support and continue making progress toward grade-level expectations.
Family Support & Communication
Strong partnerships with families are essential to student success. Amherst provides translated communications, interpreter services, and multilingual website translation tools to help families access important school information and participate fully in their child's education. Families receive regular updates regarding their child's progress, English language development, and program participation.
