Amherst Exempted Village Schools is committed to ensuring every student develops the foundational reading skills needed for lifelong success. Through high-quality core instruction, evidence-based interventions, and ongoing progress monitoring, the district provides a comprehensive system of literacy supports designed to help all students become confident, proficient readers.
Core Reading Instruction
All students receive daily instruction aligned to Ohio's Learning Standards using high-quality, evidence-based English Language Arts curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading. Classroom instruction is designed to develop strong skills in foundational reading, language comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and literacy across all grade levels.
Literacy Assessment & Progress Monitoring
The district regularly assesses students' reading skills to determine whether they are meeting grade-level expectations and to identify students who may need additional support. Multiple sources of data—including universal screening assessments, classroom assessments, and the Ohio State Tests—are used to monitor student progress, guide instruction, identify reading strengths and needs, and evaluate the effectiveness of literacy interventions.
Reading Intervention & Supports
Students who need additional literacy support receive targeted, evidence-based reading interventions designed to address individual skill gaps. Intervention services are planned using assessment data and are regularly monitored to ensure students are making progress toward grade-level reading proficiency. Instruction may be provided through small-group intervention, supplemental reading programs, or individualized supports based on each student's needs.
Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee
Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee is designed to ensure students develop essential reading skills by the end of third grade. Students identified as needing additional support receive evidence-based reading interventions and ongoing progress monitoring to accelerate reading growth. Families are regularly informed of their child's progress and the supports being provided.
Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans (RIMPs)
Students identified under Ohio's Third Grade Reading Guarantee receive a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan (RIMP). Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Ohio law extends Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans through seventh grade. Students will continue to receive a RIMP until they demonstrate grade-level reading proficiency by earning a proficient score on the English Language Arts Ohio State Test. Each RIMP outlines the student's identified reading needs, intervention services, instructional strategies, progress monitoring plan, and opportunities for family involvement.
