Title I Services
Amherst Exempted Village Schools is committed to helping every student achieve academic success. Through Title I, Part A, the district receives federal funding to provide supplemental educational services that help eligible students develop the knowledge and skills needed to meet Ohio's academic standards.
About Title I
Title I is the nation's largest federal education program and is authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have equitable access to high-quality instruction and the additional academic support they need to succeed.
Amherst operates Targeted Assistance Title I Programs at Powers Elementary School, Walter G. Nord Middle School, and Amherst Junior High School, providing supplemental reading intervention and support for eligible students. Title I services are designed to supplement—not replace—the instruction students receive in their regular classrooms. Title I teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to provide evidence-based interventions that address individual student needs.
Student Eligibility
Students are selected for Title I services using multiple educational criteria, including academic screening data, classroom performance, benchmark assessments, progress monitoring data, and teacher input. Eligibility is based on academic need rather than family income.
Reading Intervention & Student Support
Title I services focus on accelerating reading achievement through evidence-based instructional practices. Students receive targeted intervention designed to strengthen foundational literacy skills, close learning gaps, and help them achieve grade-level expectations. Student progress is monitored regularly, and instructional plans are adjusted based on assessment data to ensure continued growth.
Family Engagement
Families are valued partners in every child's education. Amherst encourages meaningful family involvement through regular communication, conferences, surveys, and opportunities for parent input. Feedback from families, staff, and student achievement data is used to evaluate and continuously improve the Title I program.
Parent's Right to Know
Parents of students attending a Title I school have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of their child's classroom teacher(s) and any paraprofessionals providing instructional support. Upon request, the district will provide information regarding:
Whether the teacher meets Ohio certification and licensure requirements for the grade level and subject taught.
Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or provisional licensure.
Whether the teacher is teaching in the field for which they are licensed.
Whether instructional services are provided by a paraprofessional and, if so, the paraprofessional's qualifications.
Parents may also request information regarding state and district assessment requirements, participation policies, and any applicable parent rights related to student assessments.
Requests may be submitted to the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and should include:
Student's full name
Parent/Guardian name
Teacher's name
