Last year, our 5th graders launched a Valentine’s Day service project, collecting food and making goodie bags for Second Harvest. This year, our Building Leadership Team (BLT) expanded the effort school-wide. Inspired by Nord teacher Julia Homolya, we adopted the Buncombe County School District, which was impacted by Hurricane Helene.
To support the district, Nord BLT combined the annual coin drive with the 2nd Annual Valentine’s Day Service Project, raising funds to help their recovery. Mrs. Homolya also created Valentines for students to write messages of encouragement, which were sent along with the donation.
Many students had seen the devastation on the news and were eager to help. The project sparked meaningful discussions about disaster recovery and the importance of ongoing support for affected communities.
Our incredible Nord families stepped up, donating an impressive $4,024.65! The Executive Director of the Buncombe County School Foundation shared her heartfelt gratitude, saying our Comets' generosity brought smiles to their faces.
A huge thank you to our Nord PTO for their support! In addition to treating every Nord student, they handled banking and mailing the donations. Way to go, Walter G. Nord!
