Amherst Exempted Village Schools
October 9, 2025
Dear Amherst School Families and Community Members,
This week, significant actions were taken at the county level that will have a serious impact on Amherst Exempted Village School District’s local funding
On Tuesday, October 7th, the Lorain County Commissioners passed Resolution No. 25-671, authorizing a “piggy-back” homestead exemption and a 2.5% owner-occupied real property tax exemption for Lorain County residents. These exemptions will not be reimbursed by the State of Ohio.
On Wednesday, October 8th, Amherst Schools received notice from the Lorain County Auditor’s Office that our district is projected to lose $442,377 in revenue due to the new homestead exemption.
On Thursday, October 9th, a second notice projected an additional $398,831 loss as a result of the owner-occupied real property tax exemption.
As noted in the Commissioners’ press release:
“Looking ahead, school boards will face significant challenges. Public education receives the largest share of property tax dollars, and how schools are funded will be at the center of future discussions.”
In total, these two actions are expected to reduce Amherst Schools’ local revenue by $841,208 next year. When combined with our projected $594,797 loss in unrestricted state funding and casino revenue this year, the district will now experience a total reduction of more than $1.4 million in funds to educate our students.
This combined loss has effectively erased the $1.2 million in inside millage revenue that resulted from last year’s property reappraisals. Despite those higher property values, Amherst Schools will actually receive fewer operating dollars than before!
We are at a critical moment in our district's future. Please review the facts behind Issue 16 and how it will ensure the district's ability to maintain quality education for all students.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and schools.
Sincerely,
Mike Molnar, Superintendent
Amherst Exempted Village School District
