☄️🏃‍♂️ Steele Boys Cross Country Season Opener 🏃‍♂️☄️

The Comets traveled to Fortress Obetz on Saturday, August 16th, to kick off the season at the OHSAA Season Opener!

🌟 Highlights from the Open Race (194 runners total):
• Freshman Jackson Strawn led the way in his high school debut, finishing 18th overall (18:43) and earning a medal 🥇
• Senior Paul Cherney ran a strong first-ever 5K (21:16, 76th place)
• Freshman Owen Cooksey finished in 21:55 (97th place)
• Juniors Chase Lahetta (23:04) and Elijah Bonilla (23:35) showed huge improvements from last year 💪
• Freshman Hayden Cuevas rounded out the Comets in 24:51 (148th place)

🔥 The varsity boys were ready to compete, but OHSAA canceled their races at the line due to extreme heat. They’ll officially open their season Monday, August 18th at 6:00 p.m. at the Lorain County Metroparks Equestrian Center.

📅 The full team is back in action next Saturday, August 23rd at Berea-Midpark Middle School starting at 11:00 a.m.

🎉 9th Grade Orientation at Marion L. Steele! 🎉

Today, we proudly welcomed the Class of 2029 with a spirited kickoff featuring our band, cheerleaders, and the iconic football helmet entrance! 💚💛

Incoming freshmen were greeted by Link Crew — a team of upperclassmen dedicated to helping new students feel at home and ready for success. Guided by our amazing school counselors, Link Crew leaders prepared fun activities, high-energy welcomes, and informative sessions to cover everything students need to start the year strong. The day ended with a lunch served by the Amherst Police Department and Frosties from the Amherst Wendy's.

👏 Huge thanks to our Link Crew and school counselors for making today’s orientation such a success! Here’s to a fantastic year ahead for the Class of 2029! 🎓

A huge thank you to volunteers Katie Wohlever and Elizabeth Fought from the Amherst Historical Society for bringing history to life for our 10th grade American History students with a powerful WWII activity called "Mail Call." While studying World War II, students explored the emotional and cultural importance of letters from home for soldiers serving overseas. They learned how letters helped boost morale, shared hometown news, and kept service members connected to their communities. As part of the experience, students stepped into the shoes of Amherst High Schoolers in March 1945 — just as students actually did during the war — and wrote heartfelt letters to soldiers, inspired by local hero and teacher Miss Marion L. Steele, who regularly corresponded with former students in uniform. After engaging with real WWII documents, homefront displays, and historical artifacts, students were matched with reenactors from the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regt, 6th Marine Division, who will receive these letters during a live “Mail Call” at the Taste of History weekend, June 13–14! Come see the past come alive — we’d love to see you there!
