UPDATE: The Amherst Police Department and the Lorain County Sheriff's Department are performing perimeter and building sweeps to determine whether the threat can be substantiated. Steele and Nord students have been evacuated to a safe location under administration and staff supervision. Parents of Steele and Nord students will receive further notification and next steps from the district when directed by the Amherst Police Department.

Steele High School and Walter G. Nord School received a bomb threat. All district facilities are on a level 1 lockdown. The Amherst Police Department and Fire Department are on scene and managing the situation. Steele and Nord will be evacuated according to district protocol. For the safety of students and staff, we are asking parents and community members to please phone lines, parking lots and streets clear. More information will be provided as soon as it is available as we secure the situation. Student safety is our top priority.

As the May 5 election approaches, many in our community have questions about Amherst Schools’ finances and Issue 1, a 0.75% earned income tax levy on the ballot.

As a public school district, we are committed to providing clear, factual information so residents can make informed decisions. While we cannot advocate for or against the levy, we can share our current financial reality, the reductions already made, and what Issue 1 could mean for our schools.

On March 12, our Amherst Junior High and Steele High School Orchestra students had an unforgettable musical experience thanks to the Nord Family Foundation!

Students traveled to the historic Lorain Palace Theatre to hear a live performance by the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra.🎼 🎻✨

This special concert introduced students to the power of live symphonic music, exposing them to professional-level performance, a wide range of repertoire, and the excitement of a full orchestra in action. Experiences like this are invaluable in inspiring the next generation of musicians and deepening students’ appreciation for the arts.

A huge thank you to the Nord Family Foundation for making this opportunity possible!
